SERRE Susumaniello Salento IGP
TASTING NOTES: A deep ruby red in colour with blue depths; on the nose the red fruits dominate with jam and notes of graphite pencil to finish. On the palate it shows a splendid balance between ripe fruit and minerality. An excellent long finish.
It should also be mentioned that Susumaniello grapes are particularly rich in anthocyanins which being anti-oxidants have numerous health benefits.

HISTORICAL AND TECHNICAL NOTES
We were among the first in the region to recognise the potential of this local native vine in the Alto Salento region located around the city of Brindisi which was on the verge of disappearing. Thanks to our efforts and foresight it has been rescued and is now recovering strongly in the region and being vinified on its own.
This is how our Susumaniello “Serre” was born… the name of the grape means “laden like a donkey“ as it is very heavily loaded with fruit when young. After a period of about 10 years the productivity falls and the best quality grapes are produced making wines which are astonishing in their quality. The Susumaniello grapes are very easy to discern being a deep blueish colour and which quality meant they were often added to improve the colour of other wines in the past.
The grapes are carefully picked by hand and then macerated in rotating horizontal tanks before maturation in French oak barriques for 6 months and then aged in bottle.
